As we reflect on the tragic events of September 11, 2001— the attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and the heroic actions of those aboard Flight 93— we encourage you to visit the Tiffin Police and Fire All Patriots Memorial and take part in a special ceremony marking the 23rd anniversary of that day.

This Wednesday, September 11, at 8:46 a.m.—the exact time the first plane struck the World Trade Center— community members are invited to join local first responders, veterans, and officials for a solemn ceremony at the memorial. The event will include reflections, a wreath-laying, a rifle salute, and the playing of Taps to honor those who lost their lives.

During the ceremony, the American flag donated to the memorial by Tiffin native Richard Martin will be raised and flown until sunset, serving as a poignant reminder of the resilience and unity that followed the attacks.

The All Patriots Memorial, located at Washington and Water streets near downtown Tiffin, serves as a powerful tribute. Featuring a beam from the World Trade Center, the memorial honors those affected by the attacks and commemorates Tiffin’s police and firefighters who died in the line of duty. Local police, firefighters, and community members raised $375,000 to create the memorial, which was dedicated on September 9, 2012.

As you visit the memorial, take note of its symbolic features. The 17.5-foot, three-ton beam rests at a 9.11-degree angle on a pentagon-shaped monument, representing the attack on the Pentagon. The beam is inscribed with “M-18,” the investigator’s identification number, while the words “Never Forget” and the names of Tiffin’s fallen police and firefighters are etched into the monument.

Behind the monument, a Callery pear tree symbolizes the Survivor Tree from Ground Zero, which was rescued from the rubble and replanted at the new World Trade Center site. Additionally, a post honoring Flight 93 stands 40 inches tall, representing each passenger and crew member who perished in the crash in Shanksville, PA. A nearby dirt mound symbolizes the crash site.

The memorial, which flies the United States flag, National Fallen Police flag, and National Fallen Firefighters flag, serves as a place of remembrance, reflection, and education. It is regularly used for memorial services during both local and national tragedies.

Seneca Starvue Theater is Re-Opening THIS Friday! Cinemark had their last day on Sunday, August 25. Then they started dismantling everything in the theater that had the Cinemark name on it. They took every movie poster down and really stripped the place bare. Fortunately, they did sell the projectors and screens and left them in place.

The investors and new owners got to work immediately. They had been advised that it would take 30-45 days to buy all the equipment they needed to buy, get it installed, and sign up with all the Hollywood movie studios.

Cinemark was technically leasing the space until Saturday, August 31, until they handed it back over to the Tiffin Mall. On Sunday, the new owners and the majority of the current employees started doing what was necessary to get the lights back on. Now an unbelievable three days later, a test movie was running at the new Seneca Starvue Theater on Wednesday. A few more test runs and the theater will be open to the public THIS Friday (9/6/24). Congratulations to the new local owners!

You can see Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Reagan, Deadpool & Wolverine, Despicable Me 4, It Ends with Us, The Forge and Twisters.

All prices are exactly the same as they were with Cinemark. All concessions are currently exactly the same. They are looking to expand the food offerings in the near future, so stay tuned! It is going to be a couple weeks, but they will have all of the same Rewards available as did Cinemark. However, your Cinemark Rewards and Gift Cards will only work at Cinemark locations. They closest ones are in Sandusky and Maumee.

Tiffin Historic Trust will take part in Ohio Open Doors from Sept. 6-15.

Visitors can discover Ohio’s amazing heritage Friday, Sept. 6, through Sunday, Sept. 15, as historic buildings and fascinating places across the state open their doors for tours and events as part of the Ohio History Connection’s annual event.

Admission to all Ohio Open Doors events is free. A list of the statewide events and activities is available at ohiohistory.org/opendoors.

“Ohio Open Doors shares stories of important landmarks and interesting sites right in our backyards, highlighting the history and unique nature of some of Ohio’s most treasured places,” said Diana Welling, Director of the Ohio History Connection’s State Historic Preservation Office and State Historic Preservation Officer.

Our organization will be hosting a ‘How Well Do You Know Your Brew-Story?’ event where the public can take free tours of the Laird Arcade Building and the Laird Arcade Brewery on September 12th from 5:30 – 7:30pm. Built in the mid-1800s by Rezin Shawhan, the Laird Arcade Building is now home to a variety of businesses. Manager, Tyler Shuff, and Board Member, Lenny Clouse, will provide tours of the Laird Arcade. Also, join Rob Weaver, brewer at the Laird Arcade Brewery (LAB), as he reveals the history of breweries in Tiffin, including one that converted to a dairy amidst Prohibition. Rob will provide tours of the LAB and explain the brewing process, while quests can choose to sample a variety of current beers on tap. The Ohio History Connection created Ohio Open Doors in 2016 to promote and inspire pride in Ohio’s heritage and to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act.

Ohio Open Doors partner organizations include the Ohio Arts Council, TourismOhio, the Ohio Travel Association and Heritage Ohio.

A mixture of blues, country, gospel and the English invasion of rock and roll that later was to be coined the phrase “Southern Rock.” The music was filled with style and emotion and with bands in the forefront such as the Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd and a band from Jacksonville called Molly Hatchet. As we enter the next 40 years of music, Molly Hatchet’s tradition and legacy keep developing the common bond of southern rockers. Keeping our southern style of music alive and well. ASIA Featuring John Payne

John Payne became the frontman of the supergroup ASIA in 1992 at the invitation of keyboardist Geoff Downes, replacing vocalist/bassist John Wetton. ASIA extensively toured the world for the next 14 years performing new classics and old favorites. With John Payne fronting the band, ASIA released eight stunning studio albums and several live recordings. In 2006, Geoff Downes left the band to reform the 1982 lineup for their 25th anniversary. On the 9th of May 2006, John Payne, Geoff Downes, John Wetton, Carl Palmer and Steve Howe contractually agreed that John Payne would continue his 14 year legacy with ASIA as “ASIA Featuring John Payne”. The World Famous Glenn Miller Orchestra

The Glenn Miller Orchestra is one of the most popular and sought after big bands in the world today for both concert and swing dance engagements. With its unique jazz sound, they are considered to be one of the greatest bands of all time. The present Glenn Miller Orchestra was formed in 1956 and has been touring consistently since, playing an average of 300 live dates a year all around the world. Music includes “Chattanooga Choo-Choo”, “In the Mood,” “A String of Pearls” and “Moonlight Serenade.”

The 148th Attica Independent Fair kicks-off on Tuesday, August 6th at the fairgrounds in Attica, Ohio. The 2024 fair will feature a cheerleading competition, Bulls & Barrels Show, OSTPA Truck & Tractor Pulls, along with livestock shows, a beer garden with nightly entertainment, inflatables and a corn pit for the kids, food stands and more. 

The Attica Fair is one of only seven independent fairs remaining in the state of Ohio. As an independent fair, they have exhibitors from several counties and dedicated volunteers to make it all happen.

The much-anticipated Heritage Day featuring the St. Wendelin Festival is set to take place this Saturday, July 27, from 11 AM to 11 PM, in downtown Fostoria. This exciting event, now in its fourth year, is a collaboration between the Fostoria Area Historical Society and St. Wendelin Parish, bringing together a variety of activities that promise fun for all ages.

St. Wendelin Parish had a longstanding tradition of hosting a weekend festival on its high school grounds, but this changed with the closure and demolition of the school in 2017. The partnership with the Historical Society has since revitalized the festivities, with many local businesses and organizations joining in to support the event.

The festival will feature a car show and children’s games, both running from 11 AM to 3 PM. The car show typically showcases 50 to 60 entries along Main Street, with participants able to register in advance online or on-site the day of the event. The Governor’s Choice, Audience Vote, Longest Distance, Oldest Ride, and Best Modern (after 1998) will awarded to participants. Participants can register online here or they can download a paper registration form off here. The registration fee is $10 and goes back to supporting the mission of the Fostoria Area Historical Society.  The society will also be hosting free museum tours throughout the event. 

Children’s games will be held at The Parkette, located at Main and North streets. Nearby, the Fostoria Rail Preservation Society will provide safety information about railroad tracks. An antiques show is also scheduled from 11 AM to 3 PM at the Fostoria Senior Center, and visitors can explore the Fostoria Museum and Foster’s Museum during the same hours at no charge.

Music will be a highlight of the day, with DJ Matt Erman playing tunes near the car show from 11 AM to 3 PM, then moving to Market Square Park for the St. Wendelin Festival until 7 PM. The evening will culminate with a performance by the contemporary Northwest Ohio band Electrik Circus from 7 to 11 PM at The UrbanWoody Brewery stage.

The festival will feature a beer tent, bounce houses for children, and a variety of food and drink vendors, including the festival’s famous bratwurst, cooked on-site. Restrooms will be available at The UrbanWoody Brewery & HoneyBee Winery, and the entire festival area falls within the city’s designated outdoor refreshment area (DORA), allowing attendees to enjoy their beverages while exploring the various attractions.

The Tiffin Bark Park is located at 606 North Washington Street, within Highland Park, and is open 365 days a year! 

The Tiffin Bark Park is not your typical off-leash dog park. With 675+ registered users, safety and health are top priorities of the park. To ensure a safe environment, every dog must have up-to-date vaccinations, verified by a veterinarian, before gaining access to the park. Once a registered user, there is a key fob system that users utilize to access the park. All you have to do is load up your pup, scan your fob, open the gate, and let your furry friend run wild! 

The park is complete with benches, different obstacles, doggy bags so the park is kept clean for all, toys and water bowls that are available for use, and wide open spaces for dogs to play with others, get out their energy, and enjoy just being a dog! Not only is the Tiffin Bark Park the grounds for furry friendships, but also for the owners, who can cultivate friendships and chat amongst one another when they please. To keep the park secure, safe for everyone, and accessible, in addition to the key fob system, there are security cameras, a special space for smaller or less active senior dogs, and the most recent addition, lights!    

The Friends of the Tiffin Bark Park, Inc. completed a much-anticipated lighting project in February of 2022, initiated with a generous grant from the Tiffin Community Foundation. The project saw the installation of 14 solar-powered lights across the 1.5-acre facility. The lighting setup includes four lights that illuminate the park beginning at dusk for five hours each night, while the remaining ten lights are motion-activated, ensuring that the park remains energy-efficient while providing visibility for evening activities. This enhancement has been a significant response to the community’s request for better lighting, as noted by Keith Hodkinson, President of the organization. 

To join the Tiffin Bark Park community, dog owners can obtain a user form here or from their local veterinary office. After the vet completes the shot record section, the owner fills out the rest and sends it in with the necessary fee to receive a personal encoded key fob. The fee structure is straightforward: $10 for the key fob and $10 for the first year of usage, with subsequent years costing $10 annually. Registration forms are also available at the park’s front gate.

Downtown Tiffin is excited to announce the return of the popular Barking Lot Party on May 16, 2024. The event will take place from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm throughout downtown and in the parking lots behind the Laird Building and Croghan Bank.  The 3rd Thursday event will feature activities for the entire family, including pet friendly specials, experiences, music, and giveaways from over 60 local businesses. 

At the event, downtown businesses will provide various dog-friendly activities, including a tutu crafting session, a contest for pet costumes, ceremonies for dog weddings, photo booths for pets, an obstacle course for dogs, special pup-cup treats, exclusive D.O.R.A. offers for adults, outdoor dining options on pet-friendly patios, and auditions for the role of “Toto” in The Ritz Players’ upcoming production of The Wizard of Oz. 

Mayor Wilkinson stated, “The Barking Lot Party is back, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to see our downtown community come alive with furry friends and family fun. Join us on May 16 for a tail-wagging good time!” 

Admission to the Barking Lot Party is free, and all well-behaved dogs are welcome to attend. Participants are encouraged to bring their furry friends on a leash and to clean up after them.

The National Depression Glass Association will be hosting their 48^th Annual Glass Show & Sale Convention in Tiffin, Ohio on Saturday, July 13 from 10 AM to 5 PM and Sunday, July 14 from 11 AM to 4 PM. The show will include 24 national glass dealers and all glass lovers are welcomed, you do not need to be a member of the National Depression Glass Association to attend.

The show returns to Tiffin for the first time since 2016 and will take place at the Tiffin Middle School, 103 Shepherd Drive. Nationally known glass dealers will be set up for this popular glass show that attracts collectors from all over the United States. In addition to the show and sale, the organization is to hold a silent auction and live auction, along with glass identification, educational seminars and displays, and hourly door prize drawings. Additional seminars are to be announced closer to the show. Admission is $10 and is good for the entire weekend.

The National Depression Glass Association will host their Banquet Dinner and Auction at the Knights of Columbus, 49 E Perry Street, at 6 PM on Saturday, July 13. The dinner will include BBQ ribs, chicken, mac and cheese, green beans, coffee, and iced team. The cost is $20 per person and those wishing to attend must call Tom Maiberger at 419-618-5036 to reserve their spot.

The show is in a handicapped accessible facility with free parking. Lunch and snacks will be available for purchase.

Visitors are also encouraged to visit the Tiffin Glass Museum & Shoppe, 25 – 27 South Washington Street, where over a thousand pieces of glassware and memorabilia items from the old factory are displayed. The retail shop offers Tiffin glass and other fine glassware for sale. Extended hours will be observed during the weekend.

It was all about messy fun at the Seneca County Opportunity Center as students enjoyed Art in the Park on May 7. Students walked from station to station swirling socks in tie-dye paint, dipping balloons in buckets of paint, throwing paint with flyswatters and squirting paint onto canvas.

Beth Smith, a retired arts and crafts teacher at the school, returns each summer to help with Art in the Park.

“It’s put on by the Parent ACT Council. The kids come together to do collective art,” Smith said. “There are quite a lot of different things for them to do.”

The artwork the students created will be displayed around the community and then sold through an online auction. The money raised from the auction will fund supplies for next year’s Art in the Park, Christmas gifts for students, and food for Dinner and Dialogue, among other activities at the Opportunity Center.

Art in the Park was held at Opportunity Park, an inclusive playground on the grounds of the Opportunity Center. The park is open to the public every day from sunrise to sunset.

Eleven Calvert Catholic High School students volunteered to help at Art in the Park. This was the second year Calvert students participated in the annual event.

“It’s our pleasure to come here. We looked forward to this,” said Marla Shultz, who teaches art to high school and middle school students at Calvert. “We’re very thankful they have us here.”

Marla chose some of her top art students for Art in the Park.

“These are my advanced students. They are leaders,” Marla said. “All of them are creative and passionate about their love of art. This event gave them real-world experience and let them share their art with others.”

Smith was grateful Calvert students chose to share their gifts with Opportunity Center students.

“They are wonderful. I can’t say enough good about them,” she said.

Marla’s son, Harrison Shultz, was among the Calvert art students who helped at the event. He volunteered last year and was happy to return.

“It’s definitely exciting just to see the kids come and see the smiles on their faces,” Harrison said. “They are enjoying this, and it’s good for the Calvert students to see what the Opportunity Center is like.”

Harrison said last year’s Art in the Park provided his first visit to the Opportunity Center. What stuck out to him the most was the students’ extensive abilities.

“I got to see what the kids can do,” he said. “Some of them didn’t want to leave. They wanted to stay and talk with us.”

The Calico Charlie’s storefront has now come to include more than just your favorite throwback candy, but also newly made candies as well as retro sorts, along with different types of popcorn, children’s games and books and the ability to provide activities for youngsters, retro and sports signs, and gift jars and gift baskets.   

The name of the business is a nod to the past; Calico Charlie was the nickname of Charles Foster Jr., the son of Fostoria’s namesake and both a congressman from Ohio and the governor of the state in the late 1800s. After his marriage to Annie Olmsted, two daughters were born to them, Jessie and Annie. During the Civil War, Charles Jr. remained in Fostoria, attending to the duties of the growing store and its many responsibilities. Later, when he went into politics, his democratic rivals first used the nickname to say that while other men fought for the country, Charles Jr. stayed behind the counter selling calico (cotton cloth) to the soldiers’ wives. His friends toop up the challenge and calico neckties became the trademark of the followers of “Calico Charlie”.

The event will include FREE activities for the whole family, including inflatables, crafts, roaming mascots and resource tables. Family Fest will have access to the playground, shelter house and sand pit for castle building. Swimming will be available from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM at Tiffin City Pool.

On Sunday May 5th, the Amsden United Methodist Church will hold an open house from 2pm-4pm and all are welcome! Lois Trumpler, a long-time resident of Amsden and member of the Amsden Church, will give a 30 minute presentation on the history of the Amsden area and church.  Visitors will be able to see the original features of the church and windows from the inside. There will also be historical pictures and articles available for viewing throughout the afternoon. This is a free event and those who are participating in the Secrets of Seneca County Historical Driving Tour (learn more here) can take advantage of getting to explore the inside of this stop in Jackson Township! The Seneca County Bicentennial Committee extends a warm invitation to all to join in a celebration of community and heritage.

In the heart of Seneca County, nestled on the fringes of the once-impenetrable Black Swamp, lies the charming village of Amsden. Established amidst the trials and tribulations of the mid-1800s, this settlement stood as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit against nature’s harshest whims. Life in Amsden during its infancy was akin to a battle against the elements. Mosquitoes danced in swarms, and the howls of wolves echoed through the marshy landscape, making every day a struggle for survival. Yet, undeterred by these adversities, the pioneers of Amsden forged ahead, laboring tirelessly to clear the land and drain its marshy waters.

The advent of the LE & W Railroad breathed new life into Amsden, connecting it to bustling hubs like Fostoria and Sandusky. Like arteries pumping vitality into the village, the railroad brought prosperity, as small businesses and homesteads sprouted along its path. Where once stood wilderness, now stood a thriving community. Amidst the hustle and bustle of progress, the Amsden Church emerged as a beacon of hope and unity. Erected by the Methodist Episcopal Church, it stood not only as a place of worship but also as a memorial to the brave Union Soldiers who fought in the crucible of the American Civil War. The stained-glass windows, adorned with symbols of honor and sacrifice, whispered tales of courage and resilience to all who entered.

Fast forward to the present day, and the Amsden Church stands as a timeless testament to the enduring spirit of its founders. During this weekend’s event, visitors are invited to embark on a journey through time, exploring the rich tapestry of Amsden’s past. So come, wanderer, and heed the call of history. Step through the hallowed halls of the Amsden Church, where the echoes of the past mingle with the whispers of the present. For in this sacred space, the legacy of Amsden lives on, a testament to the enduring spirit of a community forged in the crucible of time.

The Seneca County Museum will begin its 2024 Speaker Series with Leonard Skonecki on Sunday, April 28 at 2 PM. He will present a program on the robbery of the First National Bank of Fostoria. On May 3, 1934, John Dillinger and one of his gang, Homer Van Meter, robbed the bank of $17,299. In the course of the robbery, nine persons were shot, including Fostoria Police Chief Franklin Culp. In order to make a safe getaway, Dillinger and Van Meter took two bank employees hostage.

Leonard will be sharing information about the robbery, related events, and how it affected the persons most directly involved. He will also allow time for questions.

Leonard was born and raised in Fostoria and graduated from St. Wendelin High School in 1968. He then lived in Toledo and Dayton and returned to Fostoria in 1995. He has served as the president of the Fostoria Area Historical Society, and also worked for WFOB where he hosted the Friday edition of the Talk@10 interview show. In addition, he has written for the Fostoria Focus for 15 years and worked at the Kaubisch Memorial Public Library.
