The observance of Juneteenth is about the journey and achievement of African Americans from a horrific period in American history. On June 19, 1865, nearly two years after enslaved Africans in America were emancipated, Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas, with news of freedom. More than 250,000 African Americans embraced their new freedom on this day. This event magnified the hopes and dreams of those who held fast to the promise of true liberty for all.

Juneteenth is celebrated as a day of liberation for African Americans and emphasizes education, reflection, and community. It's observed with various events such as parades, picnics, educational programs, and gatherings to honor African American history and culture. It's not only a celebration of freedom but also a reminder of the struggles and resilience of African Americans in the face of oppression and discrimination.

In 2021, President Biden signed legislation establishing Juneteenth as the nation’s newest federal holiday.
